To the already known charm of Bacalar is added one that for many goes unnoticed or that they do not even know about these organisms so important for the ecosystem, it is nothing more and nothing less than the Stromatolites.
WHAT ARE STROMATOLITES?Stromatolites are groupings of cells in colonies that create sedimentary rocks, cells that with their life make a construction. In fact, it is technically considered a green building. They appeared between 2,500 and 1,000 million years ago.
These rock beings were the ones that produced oxygen in a massive way, their presence caused the atmosphere to change to the conditions we know today, thanks to them life on the planet was possible.
They have a rocky nature composed of calcium carbonate that grow vertically after a long process and produce structures of various shapes. They were the first living things that formed the reefs. They are very important in the ecosystem as they release oxygen into the atmosphere and keep the lagoon healthy.
There are few places in the world where they can be observed.
BACALAR IS ONE OF THE FEW PLACES IN THE WORLD WHERE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO ADMIT THIS ROCKY BEINGS
It is important to mention that it is a show that occurs in very few places in the world and fortunately one of those is Bacalar. In addition to Bacalar, these fabulous specimens are found alive in very few other places, such as on the west coast of Australia, in the Chichankanab lagoon, in Quintana Roo, in the Bahamas, in the Red Sea, in the Lagoa Salgada area of Rio de Janeiro, Cuatro Cienegas in Coahuila and in the salt flats, and the Magallanes region in Chile.
TAKE CARE OF STROMATOLITES, TAKE CARE OF THE ENVIRONMENT
These ancient beings are extraordinarily fragile so you should not touch them, much less walk on them.
Remember that when you visit the beautiful Laguna de Bacalar you must be very careful and respectful of these amazing creatures that are a very important element for the ecological balance of the region.
If you visit Bacalar, you must take a walk around the stromatolites, it gives us another reason to want to return.
